Line up the edges
The cross is up; now its arms must match the sides. This step introduces the Sune, the algorithm you will use for the rest of your life.
Spin the top layer and count how many cross edges match the colour of their side centres. You can always get at least two to match. If all four match, skip ahead.
If only two match: hold the cube so the matching pair sit at the back and the right (or for two facing each other, hold either one at the back), and play the seven moves in the player. Cubers call this the Sune; it cycles the unmatched edges around. You may need it twice. Re-spin the top between goes and recount.
Of everything in this method, the Sune is the piece most worth making automatic. It returns at Level 2 doing a different job entirely.
Every algorithm on this page is checked by simulation before publishing: the position shown plus the moves shown must produce a solved cube. Players: press play, or step through one turn at a time.
