The world record that 82,518 people have beaten

In 2003 the fastest official solve in history was 16.53 seconds. Today it would rank 83,913th, and the median competitor is within a few seconds of it. This is what a sport looks like before it finds its limits.

In August 2003, at a converted trade hall in Toronto, a Danish competitor named Jess Bonde solved a Rubik's Cube in 16.53 seconds. It was the fastest solve any human being had ever produced in official competition, and it made him the world record holder at the sport's first World Championship in twenty-one years. Cubing had essentially been asleep since its early-eighties craze. That summer it woke up: 88 people entered official competition for the first time in 2003, and the record book, dormant since 1982, started moving again.

What matters here is what happened to Bonde's number. Not to the world record, which fell within months and kept falling, but to the 16.53 itself, as a level of human ability. In 2003 it was the peak. The question worth asking twenty-three years later is: how many people have climbed past it?

Some context for those numbers. The World Cube Association keeps a ranking for every person who has ever completed a solve in official competition, from world champions to someone who entered one school-hall event in 2011 and never came back. That full list, every competitor in history, is the yardstick. This is not a third of the world's cubers in some loose sense. It is a third of everyone who has ever been on the books at all.

Put the same shape on another sport and it sounds impossible. Imagine the 100 metres world record as it stood in 2003, and then imagine that by 2026 a third of every person who had ever recorded an official time, at any level, in any country, had run faster than it: club runners and schoolchildren included. Nothing like that happens in athletics, because human sprinting was already close to its limits. Cubing in 2003 was nowhere near its limits. Nobody knew that yet, which is what makes the chart above worth a long look.

The curve tells the story in three phases, and it is worth walking through them. The early years climb gently: eleven people passed 16.53 in 2004, about a thousand by 2009. These were the pioneers, learning from each other in forums and early video tutorials. Through the 2010s the line steepens as the sport industrialises: better-engineered cubes, refined methods, and a generation who grew up with fast solving as a normal hobby rather than a curiosity. By 2019, 36,010 people had passed the old record. Then comes the pandemic, visible as a brief flattening: with almost no competitions in 2020 and 2021, hardly anyone could cross the line officially. And then the rebound, the steepest section of the whole curve. By the end of 2023 the total stood at 58,441. More people crossed 16.53 in 2023 alone than in the first fifteen years of the revival put together.

Where does that leave Bonde's 16.53 today? If it were someone's personal best this morning, it would rank around 83,913th in the world. The median personal best across everyone ever ranked is now 23.84 seconds, which means an entirely ordinary competitor of 2026 is within a few seconds of what was once the fastest solve in history. Further up the scale, 21,172 people have now gone under ten seconds. The current world record, Teodor Zajder's 2.76, is six times faster than Bonde's mark.

Why did the crowd get so fast? Not one row of the results explains it, so the explanation belongs outside this database, and it is worth stating plainly, because these changes drove everything in the chart above. Cube makers transformed the hardware: the stiff, scratchy puzzles of 2003 gave way to magnetised cubes engineered for speed. And solvers stopped guarding technique. The methods the pioneers spent years working out are now taught step by step in free videos, so a beginner can absorb in months what the class of 2003 had to invent for themselves. Better cubes and shared knowledge did most of the work; the results hold only the outcome, which is that a barrier that once marked the edge of human ability now sits in the middle of the pack, passed by teenagers most weekends.

And there is no sign of a floor. The record has fallen from 16.53 to 2.76 in twenty-three years, and every one of those record solves was in turn overtaken by a crowd. On the evidence of this chart, the 2.76 should expect the same treatment. Somewhere in this morning's data is a personal best that will one day look exactly as quaint as Bonde's summer of 2003.
